Things started to change a few years ago, thanks to the media in Hong Kong.

In 2009, Moses Chan, a popular artist from TVB (Hong Kong leading television broadcasting station), hosted a show about coffee and published a fun guide to Hong Kong cafés. His passion of coffee has brought the coffee culture in Hong Kong to an unprecedented level. People in Hong Kong are now looking for more than just Starbucks or Pacific Coffee.
Following the show, a number of coffee shops opened in the past couple of years. Many of the better ones go as far as serving only fresh-roasted and freshly ground beans, distinct blends and single-origin roasts.

Facing the intense competition, Starbucks and Pacific Coffee now have different campaigns in different seasons and festive to secure their market leader position. They both promote heavily during the Christmas season – specialty coffee, gift ideas, desserts, etc. Promotion usually start at the beginning of December. Through their own Facebook pages, they will announce news and promotions during the month of December. Let us take a look at some of the more important figures of the two chains collected from their Facebook pages.

Famous Hong Kong Coffee Chains

We can see that Starbucks Hong Kong has far more Facebook fans than Pacific Coffee Hong Kong (denoted by A in the picture). Nevertheless, the fans growth rate at Pacific Coffee is higher than that of Starbucks (B in picture).

Hong Kong Coffee Chains Facebook fans interaction

One more thing that is worth-noting is the rate of interaction among the fans. A look at point C in the following chart tells us that the rate of interaction is higher in Pacific Coffee fans. This rate looks at all comments, likes, and posts. It is an index irrespective of number of fans. This charts tells us Pacific Coffee fans interact on its fanpage more often than that of Starbucks.

About Pacific Coffee

The concept of Pacific Coffee was inspired by the coffee culture of Seattle, where coffeehouses were community hubs, serving great Italian espresso based coffee in generous American sizes, with informality and a friendly attitude. Since its establishment in 1992, Pacific Coffee Company has been providing world-class coffee to satisfy Hong Kong’s growing demand for specialty coffee beverages.

Starbucks Coffee made its debut in Hong Kong in May 2000, with the first store launched at Exchange Square in Central. Starbucks marked its 100th store opening at Hollywood Road in April 2008.
